Thanking Our Nurses During National Nurses Week May 6-12

National Nurses Week is held every year beginning on May 6, with National RN Recognition Day and ending on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who founded nursing as a modern profession. Growing from 11,892 nurses in 1900 to more than 3.4 million, they deserve special recognition for their dedication during this Nurses Week.

Nurses have a gift of combining science with heart. Our nurses, and nurses throughout our community, make a difference every day not only through the medical care they provide, but also through the hands they hold and hugs they give. Nurses touch more than the lives of their patients – providing comfort, peace and confidence through tough and good times. And our patients and residents are thriving because of their dedication, commitment and their heart for such important work.

We received 25 nurse nominations this year that shared an inspiring story or an inside look at what some of our nurses do every day.

For instance, Stacie Schaecher from GLC - Neligh in Nebraska was nominated as a real life "Wonder Woman" for her service to her patients and for donating her kidney to save a stranger - her husband's co-worker's wife. And Della Garris from GLC - Dexter in Missouri was nominated because of her dedication as she continues to carry on through losing her sister as well as her brother, and being diagnosed with breast cancer, within the last six months.

Beverlien Anderson at GLC - Decatur in Georgia leads her team in safety protocol education and recently prevented what could have been a negative outcome for a patient by being prompt and alert. And Mike Niay from GLC - Sheboygan in Wisconsin was not afraid to role-play as a doctor and even once as a priest in order to reach those patients with dementia while caring for them.

These are just a few stories about our nurses across the Golden Living family, and you can see each individual story by clicking on their name in this article. They will be recognized as well on our social media pages.

We share many holidays and life celebrations with our LivingCenter residents, but Valentine's Day is especially sweet for us because we have the joy and privilege of caring for many resident couples. This Valentine’s Day we feature eight GLC couples who share their stories of devotion, happenstance and ageless love.
