Celebrating a Great Teacher in Amory

Golden LivingCenters | posted August 22, 2014 | Bookmark and Share

Sara Pearson didn’t know if she wanted to be a nurse or a teacher when she was a student at Amory Career and Technical School in Amory, Miss., but after nursing school, she started her career in nursing. A few years later, the position that inspired her became available as the health sciences instructor, and she took it.

This month, Pearson accepted the AHCA Mississippi Group Volunteer of the Year Award at a luncheon held in Jackson, Miss. Her students regularly volunteer at the Golden LivingCenter - Amory, and she spoke about how proud she was of her students.

“When the students walk into the LivingCenter on the first day, they are terrified,” she said. “But after they spend more time in the program, they gain a lot of confidence and get out of their comfort zone.”

Pearson’s own grandmother also is a resident of GLC - Amory with the family moving her there shortly after Pearson’s class started volunteering at the LivingCenter because of the Alzheimer’s specialty unit there.

Next month, Pearson’s class will be considered for the national AHCA Group Volunteer of the Year Award, and we are pleased to share her story and champion an outstanding and caring group of volunteers.

National Nurses Week is held every year beginning on May 6, with National RN Recognition Day and ending on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who founded nursing as a modern profession. Growing from 11,892 nurses in 1900 to more than 3.4 million, they deserve special recognition for their dedication during this Nurses Week.

We share many holidays and life celebrations with our LivingCenter residents, but Valentine's Day is especially sweet for us because we have the joy and privilege of caring for many resident couples. This Valentine’s Day we feature eight GLC couples who share their stories of devotion, happenstance and ageless love.

We would like to recognize all of our Certified Nursing Assistants for their dedication and hard work every day. Here are a few CNAs recognized by their peers for the wonderful work they do. Read their stories in this article.
